DEFINE SUPERSEDING CAUSE.

A superseding cause is an unforeseeable intervening cause that breaks the chain of causation between the initial wrongful act and the ultimate injury. It relieves the original tortfeasor of any further liability due to lack of proximate cause. The more culpable the intervening force, the more likely it supersedes. Subsequent negligent conduct is generally not so unforeseeable that it cuts off liability.
